After two years of using my company-issued MacBook for personal things, I'm setting up a personal laptop for personal things, which I hope to be able to do more of during lockdown.

Now faced with the choice of distro, I noticed I've never been very deliberate with this. My personal history:

2004-5: Knoppix. Needed a live CD because my family (who were co-users of the home computer) wouldn't let me remove Windows. With 20GB HDD, I couldn't keep both

2006-8: Slackware. I had enough time on my hands to do manual package management

2009-13: Arch. I didn't want things abstracted away from me because I wanted to learn how Linux worked (but
pacman
is a time saver)

2013-4: Ubuntu (mandatory at company-issued laptop)

2015-8: Fedora (
dnf
seemed like a good package manager, and I wanted things abstracted away from me)

I'm curious what other crustaceans use and care about. How relevant are these things these days, now that so much of the software we run is on the browser anyway?
