Food prices today for onions, potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, avocados and strawberries: USDA wholesale and shipping point quotes with price charts, change against a year earlier, grocery ad prices by region and daily…

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) publishes daily food price data for about 290 commodities on:

- what growers were paid at shipping point

- what buyers paid at the big city wholesale markets

- what prices supermarkets advertised in their weekly ads

This data comes out as dozens of separate text reports and PDFs, one per market, with no history and no way to see how prices change over time.

I think this should be public data that is easy to access and understand, so I built an open-source tracker for it.

Interesting, how did you backfill the data if there were no history on the reports?

Shouldn't you show a sensible composite index value on top?

Excellent!

One suggestion, /food-prices/retail table sortable by column asc/desc just like in commodities

I like ordering by percentage desc to see the highest price jump

Would love sorting capabilities

Why is x axis unmarked? Is it hours, days, years, bananas?

Those graphs look like an AI tried to copy Charles Joseph Minard's Retreat from Moscow diagram without understanding what it was or what it was depicting.

It's the past year, but yeah, it should indicate that more proximally to the axis.
