The question of shell scripting (Is it always a bad idea? How to do it well?) comes up a lot. There should be a tag for it.

Currently, going to lobste.rs/replies will give you this message:

2020-12-03: We recently migrated the database and this feature hammers this db config, so it's unavailable until we can sort that out. Sorry for the hassle. - Peter

Having looked at the code, the query in question is definitely a hefty one.

I've looked at ways of optimizing it and all that, as have I'm sure people smarter than I. I'm sure it's doable, but it's a matter of how much time it would take and how much of the rest of the codebase would need to change.

No rush, as I realize we all enjoy this community for free, but is there an update on the plan to get it fixed? I (and I'm sure others) would be happy to help out in whatever way we could.

PS> And, again, thank you to everyone involved in keeping lobste.rs running. It is without a doubt the best tech link aggregator and discussion site out there.

I think it would be nice to be able to throw some extra detail in comments from time to time that shouldn't be generally shown without clicking expand. Things which aren't core to the discussion but help support the comment are worth doing here. Opening in meta because this feels less like the sort of thing that belongs in a github issue and more like something that would be useful for users of the site to discuss / have opinions on.

I.e.:
<details><summary>some text</summary> The rest of the long post </details>

It's strange, if one wants to post news about Vim or Emacs, there's a special tag for that, but there aren't special tags for news about Sublime Text, VSCode, jEdit, nano, Kakoune, Atom, IntelliJ, or any number of other editors and IDEs.

As you may know, there is an effort called https://www.kiwix.org/ that aims to make available Internet resources offline. It is mainly used to distribute static HTML dumps of Wikipedia, but other websites are supported like the StackExchange network.

To be part of kiwix, the source must be Creative Commons or something open enough to allow re-use.

So what is the license of lobste.rs?

When I go to post a comment, the comment text box doesn't show up anymore.

Instead the page content becomes corrupt and the Anubis HTML gets plopped into the page HTML somewhere, and then hangs/freezes or otherwise leaves me with nothing but an anime catgirl.
