An Argentinian-American writer and immigration advocate recently sued the federal government, demanding that it delete data that he believes was copied off of his phone when he re-entered the United States earlier this month. According to the seven-page complaint , Thomas Kennedy said that a Customs and Border Protection agent at Miami International Airport physically searched his bags, questioned him about his books and magazines, and then demanded that he hand over his phone. “[The agent] threatened me, saying that if I didn’t give him my phone, my interrogation was going to take much longer and they could retain my phone indefinitely,” Kennedy wrote. “I felt like I had no choice, so I handed my phone to the CBP agent.” Read full article Comments
Image: Carolyn Van Houten/The Washington Post via Getty Images The US executive branch is no longer acknowledging the existence of "artificial intelligence." Going forward, official policy websites, policy documents, and press releases will refer only to "Super Intelligence," thanks to a new executive order signed by President Donald Trump. "The word super is the best word of all, and it's the simplest," Trump said at an event announcing the launch of America.gov earlier on Tuesday, and said Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited the White House last week, "loves it," too. "We don't want to hear artificial. Because it's not artificial. It's very powerful, it's very brilliant. It's going to mostly be … Read the full story at The Verge.
Broadcasters should be ordered to stop running Trump commercials that appear to violate US laws, consumer advocacy group Public Citizen said today in a complaint to the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission. The ads appear to violate laws against using taxpayer funds for propaganda and a law that restricts political activity by federal government employees, the group said. "The most recent of these taxpayer-funded campaign ads, entitled 'The Final Battle,' is a copied version of an ad that the Trump campaign committee issued in the 2024 election," Public Citizen wrote . "In dead serious black-and-white footage, Trump is seen marching down a corridor with a stern look, while the audio blares: 'This is the final battle. With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the warmongers from our government.' A notice at the bottom of the screen announces: 'Paid for by the US government.'" Trump also says in the ad, "We will cast out the communists, Marxists, and fascists. We will throw off the sick political class that hates our country, we will rout the fake news media, and we will liberate America from these villains once and for all." It uses the same video and audio from an ad Trump used in 2024 , with the main difference being that the 2024 version was paid for by Trump's campaign committee instead of the US government. The White House claims its recent ads are public service announcements. Read full article Comments
Last week, when Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told the world that an OpenAI agent had accessed "non-public files" from his country's Medicare statistics portal during testing, his description of the incident was a little light on details. Today, we're getting new information on just how far OpenAI's overzealous agent went in attempting to satisfy a rather innocuous-sounding informational prompt. In a newly published blog post , OpenAI says the June incident started when the company asked "an experimental, internal-only OpenAI model" to research government spending statistics in the Australian state of Victoria. When the model ran into trouble finding that data using the publicly published statistics that it was supposed to reference, "it took actions that we had not authorized it to take" to find an answer, OpenAI said. Those unauthorized actions included finding "a way to gain non-public access to the service" and using that access to view "technical system information and source code" alongside credentials and the aggregate statistics it was actually searching for, OpenAI said. Apple continues to face backlash for removing ICE-tracking apps like ICEBlock from the App Store , a drastic step that seemed to be triggered by Trump administration claims that the apps endangered officers. According to US Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Apple has no evidence to support claims that apps raised safety concerns. Instead, the lawmaker accused Apple of using immigrant deaths with no connection to the apps to justify censoring Americans who have the right to record ICE activity. It appears that Apple is “working with the government to violate its customers’ First Amendment rights to record and report on the activities of their own government,” Raskin said in a letter to Apple sent Monday, CNN reported . Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his government is investigating a June incident in which an OpenAI agent accessed "non-public files" from the country's online Medicare statistics portal. OpenAI said in a statement that "our models took actions we did not intend" in causing the breach, which it only recently disclosed to the Australian government. Speaking in New York on Wednesday , Albanese said three other public health statistics systems also "may have been impacted" across Australian federal and state governments. He added that these portals "contain non-sensitive Medicare information" such as aggregate statistics and that early indications suggest "no personal information is believed to have been accessed." That said, Albanese stressed that the "situation is obviously unacceptable" and that he has expressed his "extreme concern" over how the incident was handled to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. On Wednesday, US government officials removed a Chinese AI search tool that was briefly deployed on the Federal Register website, Reuters reported . The change came after social media users noticed an apparent contradiction: The National Archives was using one of Alibaba’s Qwen AI models, even as top US law enforcement claimed that such models illegally copy US frontier models. Earlier this month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) named Alibaba among six leading Chinese firms allegedly conducting “industrial-scale distillation” that the agency says is helping America’s biggest competitor cut costs and development time in the race for global AI leadership. It’s unclear when exactly the National Archives, which runs the Federal Register website, began offering visitors the option to use a Qwen model to search public comments on proposed regulations. So far, the independent agency tasked with increasing public access to federal government documents has not commented on the removal and did not respond to Ars’ request for comment. The White House and the FBI have also not commented. Read full article Comments
