Google today revealed its next AI frontier model, which it's calling Gemini 4 Argon. The new model delivers "frontier performance in complex workflows across real-world software engineering, enterprise knowledge work like legal and finance, and cybersecurity defense," according to chief AI architect and Google DeepMind SVP Koray Kavukcuoglu. But the company is limiting access at first to a "set of trusted cyber defenders," and Kavukcuoglu says that Google is "actively engaged in the U.S. government's voluntary process for pre-release model access while we gradually expand access." Kavukcuoglu says Gemini 4 Argon is already powering Google's … Read the full story at The Verge.

Google promised Gemini 3.5 Pro in June, but it spent the summer trotting out smaller Flash models . Now, Google is ready to take on the frontier again with Gemini 4 Argon . The company claims this new AI offers industry-leading performance in coding, knowledge work, and cybersecurity, but you aren't allowed to use it yet. While most of us will have to wait to test Gemini 4, Google says engineers inside the company are already using the new model extensively. Argon reportedly used "fleet-wide telemetry data" to help Google save 300 TiB of memory across its data centers. Meanwhile, Argon agents have been working to migrate C/C++ codebases to Rust across Google, including thousands of lines in the core re2 and libgav1 libraries and more than 800,000 lines in the Fuchsia OS Zircon kernel. Google has also come armed with a raft of benchmarks to back up its claims. On the software engineering DeepSWE v1.1 benchmark, Gemini 4 Argon hits 77.9 percent, which is higher than GPT-6 Astra, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5.5. Google promises similar power across a range of long-horizon tasks, pointing to Argon's industry-leading score in the economic analysis Vals Index test. Read full article Comments

Google's new Gemini 3.8 Live update lets users have conversations with the model while watching an animated AI persona respond in real time. The "Live Avatar" will lip-sync and show different facial expressions during conversations, but it's currently only available to Gemini Enterprise customers. As noted by Google, Live Avatar can transition between the 97 languages it supports "without degrading video fidelity or introducing visual drift." One video shared by Google shows its Live Avatar talking in English and Japanese, with its mouth animation lining up with what it's saying in both languages. It can also pull up information on-screen w … Read the full story at The Verge.

Google's launching an "early experiment" feature on Pixel 11 that lets users delegate local business calls to Gemini, like making a reservation, checking if a product is in stock, or rescheduling an appointment. According to Google, you don't even need to start the call to have Gemini handle it for you: Instead of dialing yourself, just tell Gemini to call on your behalf using the Gemini app on your Pixel. Gemini will call the business, introduce itself, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and handle the conversation with the person on the other end. You remain in control at all times with a live transcript view and the ability … Read the full story at The Verge.

Google is reportedly nearing the launch of its long awaited Gemini 4 model, after dawdling behind rival developers on flagship AI releases. Speaking with The Information during his first media appearance as the leader of Google's DeepMind division, Koray Kavukcuoglu said that Gemini 4 is currently in its refinement stage, and that the company is aiming to launch the model "much earlier" than the end of the year. "Our intention is to, like - as soon as possible - to release an early post-training output because we see the results and we are excited," Kavukcuoglu told the publication, adding that Google would "continue the fast-paced iteratio … Read the full story at The Verge.

It has become increasingly common for AI firms to announce that their latest and most capable models engaged in unauthorized real-world hacking. Google, which has been slow to release frontier Gemini models in recent months, has been absent from the "rogue AI" conversation until now. Following a Wall Street Journal report, Google has confirmed that Gemini models hacked three companies during a May 2026 test, but the nature of the intrusion isn't as troubling (or impressive) as previous AI hacks. The hack took place during a test conducted by cybersecurity firm Irregular. A collection of Gemini models were taking part in a "capture the flag" exercise intended to test the AI's cybersecurity capabilities in a closed environment. The AI was instructed to retrieve information from a fake company (which shared a name with a real company) within this environment. Irregular was not supposed to allow the model to operate outside its servers, but due to a misconfiguration, Gemini was able to access the Internet. When Gemini started snooping around the web, it targeted real infrastructure instead of the fakes. For one of the three hacks, Gemini simply guessed passwords until it accessed a company's online services. In the other two instances, Gemini searched public software repositories until it found login credentials for companies that had been accidentally included. Read full article Comments

In May, Gemini broke containment and hacked three different companies, but Google didn't disclose the incident until the Wall Street Journal approached the company. The hacks happened during a test of the model's cybersecurity capabilities run by third-party Irregular, which was also involved in similar incidents involving Meta and OpenAI. According to WSJ , Google didn't disclose the hack because it didn't consider it to be an "example of model misalignment." The company said that it was an instance of "mistaken identity," and once the model realized it had brute-forced its way into a real company by guessing a password, it stopped. "In th … Read the full story at The Verge.

Google's AI models may not be in the lead by most measures right now, but the company does have one key advantage: your data. If you're deep in the Google ecosystem, Gemini models have a lot of context on you already. Google's latest Google Labs experiment, known as CC , aims to expand that kind of customization to the whole family. CC is an evolution of something that Google announced in 2025. The original CC eventually became Gemini's Daily Brief, which churns through the data in your Google account to offer daily action items and suggestions. The new CC has a similar goal, but it's designed to be a shared resource for up to six users in a family. Google says that CC has its own Google account, allowing each family member to interact with it (or not) as they choose. For example, CC only sees emails from its connected users if they are explicitly shared. You can do that by designating certain addresses as always available to the agent—something like school scheduling emails. You can also send content to CC via email or Google Chat. The agent can even monitor a shared Google Drive folder, into which you can dump invitations, documents, and other content. Read full article Comments
