<p>After two years of using my company-issued MacBook for personal things, I'm setting up a personal laptop for personal things, which I hope to be able to do more of during lockdown.</p> <p>Now faced with the choice of distro, I noticed I've never been very deliberate with this. My personal history:</p> <ul> <li>2004-5: Knoppix. Needed a live CD because my family (who were co-users of the home computer) wouldn't let me remove Windows. With 20GB HDD, I couldn't keep both</li> <li>2006-8: Slackware. I had enough time on my hands to do manual package management</li> <li>2009-13: Arch. I didn't want things abstracted away from me because I wanted to learn how Linux worked (but <code>pacman</code> is a time saver)</li> <li>2013-4: Ubuntu (mandatory at company-issued laptop)</li> <li>2015-8: Fedora (<code>dnf</code> seemed like a good package manager, and I wanted things abstracted away from me)</li> </ul> <p>I'm curious what other crustaceans use and care about. How relevant are these things these days, now that so much of the software we run is on the browser anyway?</p>

<blockquote> <p>51nb forums, which is the biggest Thinkpad forum in China is well known for it's mods to Thinkpads. It's user "Hope" (which is well known for modding modern motherboards to old IBM devices like T40, T60 and X-series) had organized a team for designing and testing those motherboards. Those mobos are made in OEM factory near Shenzen based on "Hope's team" design.</p> </blockquote> <blockquote> <p>Those mobos have firmware support by Hope and those support all urgent Thinkpad features. Naturally, those modern Haswell/Broadwell -mobos doesn't have support for legacy features such as Cardbus and they haven't got dock connector for these mobos (I think Lenovo have somekind of patent for those connectors).</p> </blockquote> <p>via <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4vl92m/51nbs_x62_with_broadwell_i7_available_as_complete/d5zhcnz" rel="ugc">nkwsky on reddit</a></p>

Gemma 4 E2B q4_0 served by llama.cpp on one laptop, CPU-only and on a GTX 1650 Ti, rebuilt on CUDA 13.4 and re-measured in CPU, GPU, GPU, CPU order with a temperature gate. The card takes decode by 4.14x, and run order moves the answer by about 2%.

Step-by-step: running Google's quantization-aware-trained Gemma 4 E2B on a 10th-gen Core i7 laptop with a 4 GB GTX 1650 Ti — why bf16 and int8 cannot fit, why the QAT GGUF does with room to spare, and managing it with an MCP server.

The idea was big, exciting, and inspiring: What if we could get every kid in the world access to a computer? For a bunch of thinkers and executives in Silicon Valley, it felt like the way to fix everything. But the One Laptop Per Child initiative, and the XO-1 laptop designed to be given away, were both more complicated than anyone expected. In the next episode of Version History, David Pierce is joined by The Verge 's Adi Robertson and tech journalist David Imel to figure out why OLPC didn't work, whether there's anything to learn from the XO-1's innovative design, and if this kind of computer giveaway could ever succeed.
